Mill School

Lewis Hine

Lewis Hine (1874 - 1940) visited Lancaster in 1908 while working for the National Child Labor Committee. Several of his photographs are at the Library of Congress, including this one of the Lancaster Mill School. His caption reads:

"This is where the mill children go to school. Lancaster, S.C. Enrollment 163-- attendance, usually about 100. There are over 1,000 operatives in the mill. These are all that go to school from this mill settlement, which is geographically a part of Lancaster, but on account of the taxes has been kept just out of the corporate limits."
