Bishop Charles Calvin Pettey (1849 - 1900) established a high school in Lancaster around 1873 under the auspices of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church.
On August 6, 1896, Bishop Isom Caleb Clinton (1830 - 1904) deeded 2 acres of land in Lancaster Village for the Lancaster High School.
The Lancaster Normal and Industrial Institute was incorporated in 1905.

While Leroy Springs was chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1923, the school was renamed the Lancaster Training School.
In 1957 a new building was erected and the school became the Barr Street High School.
